Liability Insurance The CSCA is no longer in a position to provide liability insurance for its members. This has come about due to the massive hike in premiums in 2003. Most caving clubs have experienced a similar problem. CSCA members are advised to take out insurance cover through the BCA scheme.

Changes to JSP 419 (Nov 04)

Joint Service Publication 419 "JOINT SERVICE ADVENTUROUS TRAINING (JSAT) SCHEME" has just been updated. The CSCA has been pushing for changes to this document for the last 5 years. There were confusing differences between JSP 419 and our Caving Handbook particularly in areas of group size and safety ratios. These differences have now been removed with the NCA recommendation of a maximum group size of 6 being removed.

The following rules apply to group size and safety ratios:

a. A minimum of leader, deputy and 2 participants (1:3)

b. For predominantly horizontal caves which may contain a simple ladder pitch: A maximum of leader, deputy and 6 participants (1:7)

c. When using vertical techniques, either multi-pitch ladder and lifeline or SRT the maximum group size is to be reduced to leader, deputy and 4 participants (1:5) (when teaching SRT reduce to 1:3)

d. A deputy leader is required for all caving trips. The role of the deputy leader is to safely lead the group out of a cave and raise the alarm if an incident should happen. The deputy leader need not be qualified but, in the opinion of the leader, must be suitably experienced for the grade of cave and activity planned. If a suitable deputy leader cannot be identified; the trip is to be cancelled.

Copies of JSP 419 are available on the Military Net. Anyone who needs a copy of JSP419 and does not have access to the military net can request a copy (PDF format) from the Tech Adviser. Please state the reasons why a copy is required.
